Jawn of the Week

April 13th, 2012 by admin

BADBADNOTGOOD struggle to release any bad content. They find that perfect of balance of covering songs that’ll gain a wider audience, but still keep the real music nerds happy with their gritty interpretations. I first heard them covering some Odd Future stuff, which instantly blew me away, these guys weren’t half steping, they rocked it!
Further on I was pleased with them getting on the DOOM, Tribe & Zelda tip, all of which if you haven’t heard for yourself, I suggest you click the aforementioned links!

BBNG have just put our their second released, aptly titled BBNG2. It’s a mixture of covers and some original compositions. All pretty damn enjoyable, and all for god damn free!

Give it up, real music is around. It hypes me to think that these guys are exposing that wider (Odd Future) audience to a whole new level of sounds beyond cussing loudly on a track (not that there’s anything wrong with that)

Download BBNG2 here, and stream my favourite of the album, and original compositions from the group with gritty as fuck drums!

Sound Selections #001 – Josh Roberts

April 3rd, 2012 by admin

Welcome to the first installment of “Sound Selections”, one theme, one mix, one person. To kick of this new series, we enlisted the help of skateboard film-maker, Josh Roberts where we’ve asked him to select his favourite songs from skate videos. You may be familiar with some of his work from videos such as, In Good Company, The Perfect Amount of Lazy, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels & even from a few of our video lookbooks. If not, do yourself a favour and click the links.

Many of us, myself included, could go on and on about their favourite video parts and the songs that accompny them. The songs always remind you of these videos and often take you back to a snapshot in time from that period. With Josh’s first hand experience behind the camera we thought he was the perfect candidate to select for this theme and officially kick of the Sound Selections.

PS – A little something for the skate nerds, the first person to email us us with a list of the skate videos and sections all these songs are from will win a little something for themselves.

This mix spans all genres, so this one’s for all listeners to enjoy.

Stones Throw, and one of the whitest people to do Hip-Hop since you and your mates saw 8 Mile, Jonwayne, have been kind enough to put out a free mixtape for you and yours. Now for those unfamiliar with Mr Wayne, don’t fret the skin colour. Most will agree the lack of melanin and Hip-Hop music usually don’t mix too well. Jonwayne is a great exception to this rule, the man is as talented as he is white and has been getting a lot of love lately, and rightfully so! His rhymes and beats have matured like a good cheese, which he probably eats quite a lot of (I kid, I kid!)

The track below was selected because Jonwayne sits on this Kutmah beat so nicely. I could picture Biggie or Quas coming in at any moment on this one.
Don’t let the laughable artwork fool you, if Stones Throw’s co-sign isn’t enough, take it from me, this is well worth the listen!

Easy Living Bump

March 28th, 2012 by admin

Just last week it was officially announced that due to various forces that be Staple Magazine was put to rest. It’s a serious bummer, but like all things in life, even the best stuff can struggle to survive. It’s not always optimum conditions to fly and soar, sometimes you gotta find a place to land for a while until the conditions are a little better. We all hope to see Staple Magazine back in print somewhere down the track, and hopefully I have a feeling we will. Staple mag made me super proud to be a skateboarder from Perth, and I really hope that feeling can stay alive for the next generation as well.

In the wake of it all, Morgan was kind enough to send some articles scheduled for Staple Issue 9 our way. We’re hyped to bring you some of these gems from the West.

Hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Somewhere in the mish mash of curtain shops, bed sellers, car dealers and bottle shops that is Stirling Highway there was once an epic skate spot called Easy Living. It was basically an old carpark, made out of that 50s driveway concrete. The main feature was what we then called an ollie bump. A kicker which had kind of minimal run up, but if you hit it with the right gusto you could clear a bin, a chair or a couch. There were assorted other slants there, all pretty mellow, but if you hit them in the right order it was really quite fluid. The spot could definitely hold a few people per session too. To get run up for the bump you would line up along a fence that boarded the spot. At times the fence would see a line up of more than ten of us – which was more than half the skatulation of Perth. It was one of the true epicentres of the scene. This was a year or two before Woolies was waxed. The fact that Easy Living was a furniture shop definitely made the spot better as when there was a damaged couch we inducted it into our session (or our houses).

It always seemed that when a spot like this is truly vibing there is one person with a tendency to ruin it. A prick who wants to pop your bubble. Usually it comes in the form of a hell bent cop, a grumpy sugar dependent security guard or an irate business owner. In this case it was the latter. Despite the fact that the carpark was already damaged and regardless of our constant cleaning post session the owner of Easy Living would always kick us out. I mean it was out of bounds six of the seven days, but on Sundays we would get a chance to overtake the empty lot. Even on the odd one you would still get the boot from the bummed out owner. He was truly relentless. A couple of years before Easy Living was demolished the business moved. I think it was in 1994. As ‘old mate’ left the business for the last time, he turned his frown upside down and busted out a handstand across the joint. Yep he was a skater from way back. We were gobsmacked.

Boston based Black EL (Rhymes) and Durkin (Beats) have teamed up to put out The Collage EP. Durkin beats definitely have that newer sound to them. Some hit the right note, other a little to hype for me. But Black El has got the voice and flow that I can get down with (He sounds a lot like Fashawn, or is that just me?).
Whilst I can’t gel with the whole EP, I thought I should at least share the opening track. This one comes in hard, feel it!
