Vibe

Whilst recently working on a design project that drew inspiration from Jazz album art of the 50′s & 60′s, particularly that of the Blue Note catalog, and more to the point, the work of one of my favourite designers Reid Miles. I stumbled upon an old video I had forgotten about and had to share it!

Anyone into jazz or design will appreciate the work gone into this and if you’re interested, you can read more about Reid & Blue Note here.

For those who are unfamiliar, Quakers is a hip-hop collective boasting 35 members which orbits around a core of three producers: Fuzzface (Geoff Barrow), 7-Stu-7 and Katalyst.
Jonwayne is the best fat, white rapper since Fat Joe started doing the rock away.

Enjoy!

Glenn Palmer

May 2nd, 2012 by admin

Here’s another installment from the would be pages of Staple Mag for you. This one being a little check out with Perth’s biggest larker Glenn Palmer. Glenn spends his most of his days working at Beyond Skate, taking photos, making music and rolling about the city with his next level balance and grace, gentle like a fawn yet staunch like a buck. Lenny has been holding shit down, and although this interview is a little old, I’m still super psyched to present it you all. I’ve thrown a few extra “vibe” photos of mine in for good measure. More people should know about this guy, so get used to seeing his face and hearing his name!

Glenn is one of those cats who seems to have spent more time on the planet than his years allow for. Even his skateboarding reeks of decades of deftly honed control. Aside from skating Glenn is a culturally aware creature who lives for music, photography and many forms of art.

How did the tumultuous relationship with the rolling board begin?

My oldest brother was into skating when I was still quite young. He’s eight years older than me so I was into what ever he was into really. He always had boards around the house and one skate video “Color” is still one of my favourites today. We spent a lot of time skating out the front of our house in Willetton. We had a nice little driveway and hill combo to skate and later on some fun schools and street spots. Once my brother got his license he would sometimes let me tag along with his mates to Vertigo too.

Have you travelled lately?

Spent a few months in the states last year a month in NY and hung out in SF for a bit and drove up to Oregon to skate some of the concrete parks, stoked I got to skate Burnside! I finished the trip in Seattle.

What you been up to aside from rolling on the old sled?

Lately I’ve been doing quite a bit of art again, making some stuff that I’ve been selling in the (Beyond) city store, which has been good. Shooting photos still quite a bit but I’ve got a backlog of film to get processed so that’s been slowing me down a little. Playing a lot of music, the band’s coming back together which I’m really psyched about doing and I’ve been slowly building a new guitar for myself, which has been a really fun new project.

What have you been playing?

I play guitar mostly and a bit of keyboard and have been getting into playing bass a bit lately too. I like to be able to start a song really nice and pretty and get it to the point where we can get a little bit gnarly and make some weird noise I guess I’ve getting into the heavier side of things a bit more lately me and Jim (Hensby) just like to go craze when we jam.

What kind of terrain do you live for?

I’m all for skating everything, I really like skating transition, but I’ve been skating mostly street lately, they just re-paved a lot of the city so there’s just so much to skate right now!

Thirsty? nah. i’ll just ollie it (Photo: Garth Mariano)

What kinds of arrangements inspire you to take a photo?

I like portraits a lot and taking photos of people’s day to day lives, and their spaces. It’s a little hard to explain but I’m all for natural photos. It normally takes me a while to go through a roll; I’m really quite picky about what I shoot these days.

Liu

May 1st, 2012 by admin

One of the best things about skateboarding is the people you meet. Now-a-days, no matter what city you go on this earth you visit, you can be sure to hear the sound of urethane screeching on cement. Any time I’ve visited another city on my skateboard, I’ve ended up making friends with people with no other reason then, hey, we both skate, lets kick it!
That’s really fucking cool when you think about it. I mean, it’s not like you could go half way around the world and bro down with some people you’ve never met before simple because you’re both wearing New Balance, or you both like drinking beer. There’s something about this four wheel mode of transport that can connect people with literally nothing more in common then both being down for skateboarding.

Which leads me into an introduction to our home-boy Liu from Japan. Liu has been living in Perth for the last few months and we’ve all become quite fond his unique approach to skateboarding, his love of getting crysp and dropping “Papa Seet” calls (Sorry, only about 10 people will make sense out of that).

Liu also shoots photos, he has put out a few rad zines from skateboarding throughout his travels around the traps. He’s aiming to put one out on his time spent in Perth, hopefully we can share that one with you on it’s release!

I enjoy taking photos of Liu, below is the evidence of that. He’s comfortable in front of the lens, and has one of the flowiest almost elastic like styles when he’s on the board.

Jawn of the Week

The word “mash-up” is usually quick to scare me away. I’m inclined to scroll right on past it and leave it to the Laptop Party DJ and V-Neck wearing fans. In my mind, it usually evokes feelings of cheap and painfully ironic “party tunes”. But every now and then, it’s worth holding your finger on that scroll button for a little and clicking play.

Q-Tipokratiya is a mash-up album by TenDJiz (Miami-based producer/sound-engineer) created by blending Q-Tip vocals beats sampling Soviet Soul and Jazz. These are pretty well thought out blends with the beats complimenting that smooth Q-Tip flow. I often find it hard to heard people remix a classic, it’s hard for it not to sound strange on any other beat but the original, so hats off to TenDJiz for this one.

You can download the whole thing for FREE here. (Also, check out his De La Soulviet mash-up if you haven’t already)
